Should The UK Legalise Assisted Dying?

Today, I want to talk about a very important topic: Should the UK legalise assisted dying?

This subject has come to the forefront through various discussions online, particularly a tweet by Peter Sweden, which really sums up how I see things. He wrote:

“Let me tell you the real reason the British government voted to legalise assisted dying: elderly people cost the state money, so they’re happy to just let them die more quickly instead of spending on their healthcare. This is socialism — and it’s evil.”

Yesterday, I created a video regarding the abortion bill, which allows babies to be aborted up to birth. I would say this is a similar issue. Both are very evil, and certainly from a Christian point of view, neither aligns with Scripture.

The Reverend Canon Brett Murphy commented, “Man-made horrors beyond your comprehension.” This was shared by David Vance alongside a post showing Dr. Philip Nitschke demonstrating his euthanasia pod, the SarcoPod, which fills with nitrogen after a button is pressed.

It reminded me of when I used to take pigs to a modern abattoir — everything was very clean and quick — but there’s a big difference between animals and humans.

Dr. Philip hopes doctors will embrace this 3D-printed SarcoPod once the bill becomes law. Below that post was a reply highlighting a disabled woman in Canada who claimed the government was forcing her to die through assisted suicide. She said, “It’s not what I want.” Another cancer patient revealed being asked about medical assistance in dying, raising concerns about euthanasia spiralling out of control.

Reverend Canon Brett Murphy also shared a post from Ricky Doolan, referring to someone as “like the head witch of a death cult.” While strong language, I understand where he’s coming from.

One person said:

“We can’t deny this is a huge moment in time. But equally, people are dying every day. What we’re doing is just adding an extra dimension of choice to those who are dying. We know that in every hospital, hospice, and home, people are facing their final few moments. What we’ve done with this huge change — and I appreciate that — is given people choice and dignity where they might not otherwise have it. And the good thing about choice is that you don’t have to take it. We’ve just created that opportunity for anyone who might want it — or even just for the reassurance of knowing it’s there.”

So now we have “choice.” But I don’t think that’s where this is really heading. I don’t think we’ll have true choice long-term. That seems to be the government’s aim.

Tim Stanley wrote a powerful article in The Daily Telegraph: “If assisted dying passes, the state will have given itself the power to kill.”

This is a very sad subject. There’s not much more to say on it — but I always like to ask: does it line up with Scripture?

Let’s turn to the Bible.

Old Testament Scripture – Exodus 21:12–14

“He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. However, if he did not lie in wait but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint you a place where he may flee. But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbour to kill him by treachery, you shall take him from My altar, that he may die.”

This shows there are consequences for taking a life.

New Testament Hope – Healing and Eternal Life

Jesus left us His Holy Spirit. He said we could heal the sick. I’ve seen it myself. I’ve prayed for people and witnessed healing with my own eyes. If you’re not a Christian, that may sound far-fetched — but I know it’s real.

Matthew 10:7–8

“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”

Mark 16:17–18

“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

That’s a huge difference between life and death. People who are ill can be prayed for and healed — if they believe.

John 14:12–14

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

It must line up with Scripture — but what a difference between what the Bible teaches and what our MPs are saying.

Good News For The Christian

The good news is that for those who believe in Jesus, death has been defeated. Jesus died a painful death on the cross so that we might have eternal life and life in abundance.

Maybe you have listened to this video, or blog post and you are not  a Christian, I invite you to consider the following prayer. If you say it sincerely, you can receive the Holy Spirit and the wonderful gift of eternal life:

“Dear Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as Lord and Saviour of my life. I repent of all my sins, and I ask You today to take over complete control of every aspect of my life. Amen.”

Now if you said that prayer and meant it, you can receive new life in Christ.
