Church Attendance Quadruples Among Gen Z In The UK

Church Attendance Quadruples!
Church Attendance Quadruples!

The title on my video and blog post today is, church attendance quadruples among Gen Z in the UK. Recently, I saw a tweet from Colin Rugg reporting that church attendance among Gen Z has quadrupled in the UK, reversing the trend of declining Christian affiliation. This is truly great news in a time when so much of our news is negative.

Gen Z’ers, many of whom didn’t even grow up in church, say that Christianity is providing them with answers they can’t find anywhere else. I’m not surprised, because Jesus really is the only answer. People are realising that some things simply can’t be solved by human strength, and Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Staggering Growth Statistics

In 2018, just 4% of 18–24 year olds said they attended church at least monthly. Today, The Quiet Revival reports this has risen to 16%. Young men have increased from 4% to 21%, and young women from 3% to 12%, according to Bible Society data.

Former pastor Ryan Burge said to Vox:

“On some metrics, this data says that young people are actually more likely to be weekly religious attendees than millennials are. This is huge; we’ve never seen that before. We always assumed religion was going to continue to decline, but it doesn’t look like that decline is continuing.”

According to the New York Times, the Catholic Church in France baptised over 17,000 people in a year – the highest yearly number in over two decades. That is amazing news.

The Quiet Revival in the UK

In The Times, an article titled “Why Christianity’s Quiet Revival is Being Led by Gen Z Men” highlighted this trend further. Amid the controversy surrounding this year’s Glastonbury, musician James Partridge led nostalgic singalongs of school hymns such as “Give Me Oil in My Lamp” and “Shine Jesus Shine”, with huge crowds joining in.

The article continues, explaining that despite the plethora of identities and ideologies available today, none seem to make people happier. Combined with political turmoil, economic uncertainty, and global conflict, many are searching for a better story of reality. It says:

“That’s why a new generation seems to be rediscovering the original biblical story. It’s a story of a God who created us to share his life with us, died for us, and rose again to offer hope for eternal life. A story that seemed old and redundant to many boomers and Gen X is offering new meaning, purpose, and identity to Gen Z.”

Are People Turning to Jesus Because of Government Failure?

I joked with a friend that maybe people are turning to Jesus because the Labour Party is making such a mess of things. Although we laughed, there may be some truth in it. Poor government often makes people look for hope elsewhere. I recently saw a poster listing Labour’s actions over their first year, such as scrapping winter fuel payments, releasing prisoners early, business collapses, increased illegal immigration, inflation rises, and more. Perhaps these failures are driving people to seek real hope in Christ.

Revival in Catholic Churches

An article in The Guardian reported that Father John Armitage’s St Margaret’s Parish welcomed 5,000 people across 20 masses during Holy Week. Although it is a Catholic church, it is good to see people heading in the direction of Christianity.

Why Is It Important to Go to Church?

Going to church doesn’t make us a Christian, but the Bible does say to meet with fellow believers. Here are some key scriptures:

  • Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Key point: We are commanded to meet together to encourage each other, especially as the end approaches.
  • Acts 2:42 – “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Key point: Early believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, communion, and prayer as a gathered body.
  • Matthew 18:20 – “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Key point: Jesus promises His presence when believers gather together in His name.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 – “For as the body is one, and hath many members… so also is Christ… For the body is not one member, but many.” Key point: We are all parts of the body of Christ; church is where we operate in unity.
  • Ephesians 4:11-13 – “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Key point: Church is where God’s appointed ministers equip us for service and spiritual growth.
  • Colossians 3:16 – “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Key point: Gathering enables us to teach, encourage, and worship together.
  • Romans 12:4-5 – “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Key point: We belong to each other and need one another’s gifts and fellowship.

How to Know Jesus

If you’re not a Christian, perhaps you’re looking for hope or eternal life. Jesus brings both. He died on a cross for you and rose again. If you would like to commit your life to Him, here is a simple prayer:

“Dear Lord Jesus, I acknowledge you as Lord and Saviour of my life. I repent of all my sins and I ask you today to take complete control of every aspect of my life. Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer and meant it, God’s Spirit can come and live within you. It is truly life-changing.
