The title of my daily devotional today is, What are you pursuing? It’s so easy to start the day with headlines, notifications, and worries. Jesus offers us a better way: put the kingdom of God first. Seeking first isn’t passive; it’s active. It means prioritising God’s will, His presence, and His Word before everything else. When He comes first, everything else falls into its right place.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
Seek First: What It Looks Like
Seeking first doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities. It means making God the centre of them. Practically, it could be beginning the day with prayer, opening the Bible, or worship before anything else. That first focus sets the direction for the whole day.
When We Put God First, He Provides
Jesus spoke these words in the context of worry—about food, clothing, and the daily needs of life. He reminds us that the Father already knows what we need and that He will provide as we put His kingdom first.
I remember when I was in Bible school, searching for accommodation. I needed to decide quickly but didn’t have the finances in place. While praying, a friend called and told me he wanted to support me financially. That provision gave me the ability to move forward. I’ve seen God provide like this many times when I’ve chosen to seek Him first.
Godliness Profits in Every Season
Paul writes in 1 Timothy 4:8: “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” Keeping fit matters, but pursuing godliness carries eternal weight. Choosing God each day shapes both this life and the life to come.
A Simple Challenge for Today
So, what are you pursuing? If “seek first” means to run after, then let’s run after God. Start the day with Jesus, and keep returning to Him as the day unfolds. Let Matthew 6:33 guide your choices, your thoughts, and your priorities.
Prayer
Lord, help me to put Your kingdom and Your righteousness first today. Align my thoughts, decisions, and desires with Your will. Thank You that as I seek You, You provide everything I need. Amen.
