Britain has banned Israeli students from attending the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies. The decision, reported in The Daily Telegraph, has drawn strong criticism as a profoundly dishonourable act toward an ally at war. It is reportedly the first time in the college’s history that Israeli students have been excluded.
Major General Amir Baram, Director General of Israel’s Defence Ministry and a former student at the college, described the move as discriminatory and a disgraceful break with Britain’s tradition of tolerance and decency. He warned that excluding Israeli officers from a forum designed to build strategic relationships and understanding amounts to self-sabotage of British security.
The timing is striking. Israel is defending international shipping from Houthi aggression. Working to prevent hostile regimes from acquiring nuclear weapons, and striving to bring home hostages from Hamas captivity. Critics also note that while Israelis are excluded, nationals from other Middle Eastern countries remain eligible to apply. This really raises questions about consistency and prudence.
Public Reaction and Christian Reflection
Commentators and many members of the public have voiced concern, arguing that the UK has much to learn from a close ally that faces frontline threats daily. From a Christian perspective, the way nations treat Israel is not merely a policy choice but a moral and spiritual issue.
Scripture offers guidance on this. In Genesis 12:3 (NKJV), God says, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you.” Psalm 122:6 urges, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you.’” Zechariah 2:8 reminds us that “he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.” Isaiah 60:12 warns, “For the nation and kingdom which will not serve you shall perish,” and Numbers 24:9 declares, “Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you.” The Apostle Paul affirms in Romans 11:1–2 that God has not cast away His people.
How Should We Respond?
First, we pray—for Israel’s peace and security, and for the UK to act with wisdom and integrity. Second, we seek truth, verifying claims and avoiding hasty judgments. Third, we engage graciously: write to your MP respectfully, share concerns factually, and avoid contempt. As believers, we are called to speak the truth in love and pursue peace where possible.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, guide our leaders. Grant them courage to do what is right, wisdom to discern what promotes peace and justice, and grace to honour Your Word. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for the safety of all innocents, and for truth to prevail. Amen.
