The title of my video and blog post is, abortion or murder up to birth? But the question behind this video and blog post is even more serious: are we now looking at abortion or murder up to birth?
I recently came across a post from David Vance, and it immediately caught my attention. He was reacting to reports that Britain is moving towards a shocking change in abortion law. I then looked at an article in the Daily Telegraph by Allison Pearson, and what was being described was deeply disturbing. If this proposed change passes in its current form, it could mean that a woman would no longer be prosecuted for inducing her own abortion at any stage of pregnancy, right up to birth.
That is not a small technical adjustment. It is not a minor legal tidying-up exercise. It is a moral earthquake.
For me, this is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue, a moral issue, and a human issue. It says something about the state of this nation, about the value we place on innocent life, and about how far we have drifted from the truth of God’s Word.
How Did Britain Get to This Point?
It is hard to believe that a proposal like this has come as far as it has. We are told repeatedly that modern Britain is compassionate, progressive, and civilised. Yet what kind of civilisation even considers allowing the deliberate ending of unborn life right up to birth without legal consequence?
That is not progress. It is moral confusion dressed up as compassion.
The House of Lords vote on this issue matters because it reveals far more than a legal opinion. It reveals the spiritual condition of the country. A nation does not suddenly arrive at a place like this by accident. It gets there by steadily moving away from God, by calling evil good and good evil, and by hardening its heart to the most helpless people of all.
I recently wrote about the wider moral condition of the country in Can Britain Be Restored?, and this latest debate only adds to the sense that Britain is in urgent need of repentance, truth, and a return to biblical foundations.
The Bible Is Clear About the Value of Life
When the world grows dark, the Christian must not follow the culture. We must return to Scripture. The Bible is not vague on the value of life. It does not treat the unborn child as disposable tissue or an inconvenience. It presents life in the womb as something formed, known, and valued by God.
Psalm 139 Shows God’s Hand in the Womb
One of the clearest passages is Psalm 139:13-16. David says:
“For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
This is a remarkable passage because it shows that human life in the womb is not random. It is not an accident. It is not outside the concern of God. The Lord is personally involved in the formation of that child. That unborn baby is already under the eye and care of the Creator.
That alone should stop us in our tracks. If God forms life in the womb, by what right does man treat that life as worthless?
Jeremiah 1:5 Shows That God Knows the Unborn
Another powerful verse is Jeremiah 1:5:
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
Of course, this verse is spoken specifically to Jeremiah, but the principle is clear. God’s knowledge and purpose extend to the child before birth. That should shape the way we think about every unborn life. A baby is not merely a biological development. That baby is a person known by God.
If the Lord knows the unborn, then the unborn are not meaningless. They are not invisible. They are not beyond His concern.
Isaiah 44:2 Reinforces the Same Truth
Isaiah 44:2 says:
“Thus says the Lord who made you
And formed you from the womb, who will help you…”
Again, we see the same pattern. God is the one who makes and forms the child from the womb. Scripture consistently places dignity and value on life before birth. It does not separate the unborn from the rest of humanity as though they do not matter until someone else decides they matter.
What About the Shedding of Innocent Blood?
The Bible also speaks strongly about innocence and bloodshed. Proverbs 6 lists things the Lord hates, and among them are “hands that shed innocent blood.” That is sobering language.
There are many sins that modern society excuses, sanitises, or rebrands, but God does not change His standards to match public opinion. If innocent blood matters to Him, then it should matter to us.
It is one thing to debate policy in abstract terms, but this subject is not abstract. We are talking about innocent life. We are talking about children in the womb. We are talking about those who have no voice, no vote, and no defence except the conscience of a nation and the truth of God’s Word.
Exodus 21 and the Seriousness of Harm to the Unborn
Exodus 21:22-23 is also significant. It says:
“If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished… But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life.”
This is a serious passage because it shows that harm done in connection with the unborn child is not brushed aside. The law took it seriously. That should make modern Britain pause. Scripture does not regard the life of the unborn as morally empty. It recognises the gravity of what is at stake.
Children Are Not a Burden to Dispose Of
Psalm 127:3 says:
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.”
That is completely different from the spirit of the age. We live in a culture that often treats children as an interruption, a lifestyle problem, or an obstacle to personal freedom. The Bible says children are a heritage from the Lord. They are not a curse. They are not an inconvenience. They are a gift.
That does not mean every pregnancy is easy, or every situation is straightforward, or every person feels strong. But it does mean we must not let hardship redefine truth. A difficult circumstance does not change the value of a child.
The Unborn Child Is Not Just “Tissue”
Luke 1:41-44 gives us one of the most beautiful pictures in Scripture concerning life in the womb. When Mary, pregnant with Jesus, greeted Elizabeth, we are told that the baby leapt in Elizabeth’s womb. The passage says:
“And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb…”
Later she says:
“For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.”
Notice the language. The Bible says “babe.” Not tissue. Not cells. Not potential life. A babe.
That matters. Scripture speaks of the unborn in personal terms. The child in the womb is not less human because he has not yet been born. The modern world may use softer language to calm the conscience, but the Word of God speaks plainly.
This Is Not Just About Law. It Is About Conscience.
Laws matter because laws teach. Once something is legal, people quickly begin to assume it must also be moral. That is one of the great deceptions of our age. Parliament can legalise something, but it cannot make it righteous. A vote in the Lords cannot overturn the Word of God.
Britain may decide that the law should no longer prosecute certain acts, but heaven’s standard does not move. What is evil does not become good because politicians approve it. What is sinful does not become compassionate because it is repackaged in softer language.
I have touched on the danger of moral drift in other articles on this site, including Christian Outrage — But What Does The Bible Say? and Church Of England – Climate Or Christ?. The details may differ, but the pattern is the same. The nation is moving away from biblical truth and replacing it with man-made morality.
What Should Christians Do?
First, Christians must speak clearly. This is not the time for vague language or timid half-statements. We must say what the Bible says. Life is precious. Children in the womb are known by God. Innocent blood matters. Evil should not be normalised.
Second, Christians must not lose their compassion. This subject is deeply emotional, and many women carry pain, regret, confusion, fear, or trauma connected to abortion. The answer is not self-righteousness. The answer is truth spoken with grace. Jesus never watered down sin, but He also offered forgiveness, restoration, and hope.
Third, Christians must pray for this country. Britain does not simply need better headlines or better politicians. Britain needs revival. Britain needs repentance. Britain needs the fear of God. Without that, the moral slide will continue.
There Is Still Hope in Jesus Christ
As dark as these issues are, this is not where the story has to end. The gospel is still good news. Jesus said that the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, but He came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly.
That is the great contrast. The spirit of this world cheapens life. Jesus brings life. The world celebrates death in one form or another. Jesus offers eternal life.
Perhaps you are reading this and you are not yet a Christian. Perhaps you feel disturbed by what is happening in the country, but you are also aware of your own need of God. The good news is that Christ died for sinners and rose again. He offers forgiveness, a new start, and eternal life to those who truly turn to Him and believe.
I shared that invitation at the end of my video, and I have written more fully about it here: How To Accept Jesus Christ Today. If you are searching, please do read it.
Final Thoughts
The proposed abortion law change in the UK is not a sign of moral advancement. It is a sign of moral collapse. Any nation that loses sight of the value of innocent life is in dangerous territory.
The unborn child is not beyond the care of God. He forms that life. He sees that life. He knows that life. And because He does, we should tremble at any law that treats that child as disposable.
Britain needs truth, courage, and repentance. Above all, Britain needs Christ.
