The title of my blog post today is, Are We Being Mocked? In today’s post, I respond to a tweet shared by Calvin Robinson that announced Shabana Mahmood as the UK Home Secretary. Whether you agree or disagree with the appointment, it raises important questions for Christians about leadership, borders, policing, immigration, and how we live out our faith in unsettled times.
Why this story matters
The Home Secretary shapes policy on policing, immigration and national security. For many believers, this touches on concerns I have covered recently, including free speech, national identity, border control and the direction of public life. If you missed those pieces, you can find them here:

What people are saying
Social media reactions have ranged from strong support to sharp criticism. Some are hopeful that we will see firmer action on illegal migration and small boats. Others fear that policies will be weak or inconsistent. As ever, online comment can be heated. My aim here is to keep the focus on facts, prayer and a biblical response rather than on outrage.

Early policy instincts to watch
- Border control and removals, especially the handling of small-boat crossings.
- Possible use of visa leverage when countries refuse to take back nationals who have no right to remain.
- Reducing reliance on hotel accommodation and pressing for alternative sites for asylum processing.
Time will tell how these ideas translate into action. I will keep an eye on developments in future posts.
A Christian perspective
Whatever our personal politics, Christians are called to pray for those in authority and to measure everything by God’s Word. We can desire both compassion and wisdom. We can care for the stranger while insisting on justice and order. Also see my recent reflections in Keep Occupied! and Don’t Retire! for encouragement to stay steady and purposeful in uncertain times.
Scriptures referenced (NKJV)
- Proverbs 29:2 — “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”
- Proverbs 21:15 — “It is a joy for the just to do justice, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.”
- Proverbs 14:34 — “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.”
- James 1:5 — “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
- Proverbs 16:12 — “It is an abomination for kings to commit wickedness, For a throne is established by righteousness.”
- 1 Timothy 2:1–2 — “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”
- Romans 13:1 — “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”
My view
We should pray for the Home Secretary to act with wisdom, courage and fairness. I want to see genuine protection for the public, compassion that is not naïve, and policies that honour truth and justice. If firm promises are made, they should be kept. If rhetoric outpaces reality, we should say so respectfully and clearly.
Invitation and prayer
If you are new to this site, I share Christian devotionals and commentary on current events. I believe Jesus died and rose again so that we can have eternal life. If you would like to invite Him into your life, you can pray sincerely:
“Dear Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as Lord and Saviour of my life. I repent of all my sins and I ask You today to take over complete control of every aspect of my life. Amen.”
