The title of my video and blog devotional today is, Calming the storm. In this devotional, we reflect on the moment Jesus rebuked the wind and waves and brought a great calm. Luke records both the miracle and the Master’s probing question: “Where is your faith?” The same Jesus who spoke to the storm speaks peace into our lives today, calling us to trust Him and to pray boldly in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Scripture
Luke 8:24–25 (NKJV)
“Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?’ And they were afraid, and marvelled, saying to one another, ‘Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!’”
Jesus’ Authority Over Creation
Christ’s word carries absolute authority. Creation itself responds to the voice that formed it. The disciples witnessed more than a change in weather; they encountered the Lord of all. In our own storms—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—His authority has not diminished. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Faith Over Fear
Jesus’ question, “Where is your faith?” is not a rebuke to shame us, but an invitation to relocate our trust—from the size of the waves to the strength of His word. Faith is not denial of danger; it is dependence on Christ in the midst of it.
Greater Works Through the Holy Spirit
John 14:12 (NKJV)
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
Jesus promised “greater works” as He returned to the Father and sent the Holy Spirit. This does not make us greater than Jesus; rather, it means His ministry multiplies through His people by the Spirit’s power and across the world.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”
A Personal Testimony
Recently, during a choppy boat crossing, I prayed—and the waters settled. It was a vivid reminder that the Lord hears and acts. Whether the storm is outside us or within, He invites us to ask, trust, and watch Him work.
How to Pray When Storms Rise
- Turn to Jesus first. Bring your fear to Him honestly.
- Declare His word. Pray passages like Luke 8:24–25, Mark 4:39, and Psalm 107:28–30.
- Ask specifically. Name the storm and ask for His peace, solution, and guidance.
- Stand in faith. Thank Him in advance; choose trust over worry (Philippians 4:6–7).
- Follow His leading. Take the next obedient step He shows you.
Promises to Declare
- Mark 4:39 (NKJV): “Peace, be still!”
- Psalm 107:28–30 (NKJV): “He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.”
- Philippians 4:6–7 (NKJV): “The peace of God… will guard your hearts and minds.”
A Simple Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are Lord over every storm. Strengthen my faith today. By Your Spirit, teach me to pray and to speak Your word with confidence. Bring Your peace to my mind, my home, and every situation I face. Amen.
Reflection
- What “storm” do you need Jesus to calm today?
- Where is He inviting you to exercise faith instead of fear?
- Which promise from Scripture will you declare over your situation?
