Church Of England Backs A Palestinian State

Does The Church Of England Back Terrorists

The title of my blog post and video today is, Church of England backs a Palestinian state. In light of recent statements from Church of England bishops welcoming recognition of a Palestinian state, I want to respond from a biblical point of view. As believers, our first loyalty is to the Word of God, not to the shifting opinions of governments or church bodies. The question is simple: What does Scripture say?

God’s Covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

The Bible teaches that God entered into an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants through Isaac and Jacob. This covenant specifically includes the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession.

Key Scriptures (NKJV)

  • Genesis 12:3 — “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
  • Genesis 15:18 — “On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates—’”
  • Genesis 17:8 — “Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”
  • Genesis 26:3 — “Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.”
  • Genesis 28:13 — “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.”
  • Deuteronomy 1:8 — “See, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give to them and their descendants after them.”
  • Psalm 105:8–11 — “He remembers His covenant forever… Saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan as the allotment of your inheritance.’”

These passages make the biblical position clear: the land belongs to Israel by divine covenant. Political trends and ecclesiastical statements do not dissolve what God has decreed.

Why Political Recognition Cannot Overrule Scripture

Human institutions can make declarations, but they cannot rewrite God’s promises. Recognising statehood arrangements that undermine the covenant purposes of God does not produce true peace. The Bible consistently ties blessing to alignment with God’s plan for Israel, and warning to opposition against it (Genesis 12:3).

Three Biblical Considerations

  1. The Nature of the Covenant: It is called “everlasting.” Its permanence is anchored in God’s faithfulness, not human consensus. See the verses in Why the Land Belongs to Israel.
  2. The Line of Promise: The land promise is reaffirmed to Isaac and Jacob, identifying Israel as the covenant heir, not a generic “Abrahamic” line without distinction.
  3. Peace on God’s Terms: True peace in Scripture flows from righteousness and alignment with God’s will, not from political arrangements that contradict His Word. For a broader study, see Church and State: Who Has the Final Authority?.

Answering Common Objections

“Isn’t the Church called to seek peace?”

Yes. But biblical peace is never achieved by contradicting God’s revealed will. The prophets regularly call God’s people back to covenant faithfulness, warning against “healing the hurt of My people slightly, saying ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:14). Real peace requires truth.

“Does this mean Christians should hate Palestinians?”

No. Christians are commanded to love their neighbours and even their enemies. We pray for all people in the region and support genuine acts of mercy and justice. Loving all people and standing with God’s covenant with Israel are not mutually exclusive. We can do both: proclaim the gospel to everyone and honour God’s covenant purposes.

Standing on Scripture, Not Sentiment

The Church must be careful not to baptise political trends with religious language. When church leaders endorse policies that contradict Scripture, believers have a duty to “test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Our standard is the Bible, not popularity.

The Gospel and Our Hope

While we take Scripture seriously concerning Israel, our ultimate hope is in the Lord Jesus Christ. In Him, forgiveness of sins and eternal life are offered to all who believe. The same God who keeps His covenant with Israel also keeps His promises to everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord.
