Church of England Speaks on Gaza – But What Does the Bible Say?

The title of my blog post today is “Church Of England Speaks On Gaza – But What Does The Bible Say?” In this blog post, we take a biblical look at the recent statement made by the Church of England regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israel. While the Church rightly calls for peace, it’s important to assess these statements through a scriptural lens and evaluate whether they reflect the full truth.

The Church of England’s Statement on Gaza

The Church of England recently released a press release titled “House of Bishops Statement on Gaza”. It opens with the well-known verse:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” – Matthew 5:9

Peace is something we should all desire. But we must also face reality. The statement refers to the “death, destruction, and suffering” in Gaza, Israel, and the surrounding regions, highlighting the toll of war over the past 20 months. It condemns violence in all forms and urges both sides to end the conflict. While no one desires war, the reality is that Israel often acts in self-defence in response to attacks from its neighbours.

A Biblical Perspective on Israel

From a biblical point of view, the land of Israel is of great significance. Consider the following passages:

Genesis 15:18

“On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates.’”

This is a clear declaration that God gave the land to the descendants of Abraham—modern-day Israel. The Church’s statement, however, questions Israel’s actions and frames the war as one of aggression. But when your existence is continually threatened, self-defence becomes a necessity.

Zechariah 2:8

“For thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.’”

This verse reminds us that Israel is precious to God. Harming Israel is akin to poking God in the eye—there are consequences. We must tread carefully when making judgments about Israel.

Genesis 12:3

“I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

This passage offers a clear warning to those who turn against Israel. As Christians, we are called to stand with God’s promises, not to align ourselves with those who seek to undermine them.

Challenging Media Narratives

The Church’s statement also references alleged Israeli actions, such as attacks on hospitals and the use of siege and starvation tactics. However, we must consider who is truly responsible. Groups like Hamas have used civilians and hospitals as shields, putting innocent lives in harm’s way while hiding among them.

Recent media retractions—such as the BBC admitting a video of a supposed massacre was unrelated—highlight the importance of verifying facts. Even Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, spoke out about the dangers of taking the word of terror groups as fact. She rightly criticized outlets like the BBC for rushing to publish unverified information.

Insights from Amir Tsarfati

Amir Tsarfati, a Christian Jew living in Israel, often shares truth from the ground. He reported on the BBC’s misleading claims, pointing out the damage such narratives cause. He also revealed how humanitarian aid was successfully distributed in Gaza despite Hamas attempts to stop it—seven million meals in just eight days without incident.

The Silence on Christian Suffering

One Twitter user questioned why the Church of England remains silent on atrocities committed against Christians in countries like Congo, Syria, Sudan, and Nigeria. Why only speak out against Israeli actions? Why no mention of Hamas or ISIS? It’s a fair question—and one that many are now asking.

Scripture and the End Times

2 Thessalonians 2:8–12

“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth… with all unrighteous deception… because they did not receive the love of the truth… God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie.”

This Scripture is sobering. We live in a time when truth is distorted, and many people believe lies. As Christians, we must cling to the Word of God and seek discernment, not follow popular opinion or headlines.

An Invitation to Know the Truth

If you’re not yet a Christian, I want to share a prayer that changed my life. Jesus died a painful death so that we could receive eternal life and be made new. You can begin that journey today. Here’s the prayer:

“Dear Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You as Lord and Saviour of my life. I repent of all my sins, and I ask You today to take over complete control of every aspect of my life. Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer and meant it, you’ve just taken the first step in the most important journey of your life. You are born again—set free and made new through Jesus Christ.

Final Thoughts

The Church must call for peace, yes—but it must also speak biblical truth. Scripture is clear about God’s promises to Israel, and as believers, we are called to stand with God’s Word. Don’t let media bias or political correctness sway you from biblical truth.
