The title on my video today is, Set your mind on things above! Today’s devotional reflects on Romans 8:1–17 (NKJV) and the transforming invitation to live life in the Spirit. Scripture teaches that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ makes us free from the law of sin and death. That freedom is not theoretical—it shapes how we think, choose, and live each day.
No Condemnation, New Direction
Romans 8 opens with a thunderclap: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus… who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Freedom from condemnation isn’t permission to drift; it’s power to walk differently. The Spirit redirects our steps and renews our minds so that we desire what God desires.
Set Your Mind on Things Above
Paul contrasts two mindsets: “those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit” (Romans 8:5). Elsewhere we’re urged, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2). What we repeatedly set our minds on becomes the path our lives follow. News cycles and daily pressures can pull our focus downwards, but the Spirit lifts our gaze to Christ and His promises.
The Indwelling Spirit Changes Everything
“You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you” (Romans 8:9). The Holy Spirit is not a distant force; He is God dwelling within, producing life and peace, assuring us of our adoption, and empowering obedience. We are no longer defined by “stinking thinking,” but by a renewed identity as sons and daughters of God.
Simple Practices to Renew Your Mind Today
- Read and rehearse truth: Slowly read Romans 8:1–17. Pause to thank God after each verse.
- Pray your thoughts: When anxious or distracted, turn the concern into a short prayer and invite the Spirit’s guidance.
- Worship purposefully: Sing or speak biblical praise to shift your focus from problems to God’s faithfulness.
- Guard your inputs: Limit hopeless, doom-laden content and feed on Scripture-rich, faith-building material.
- Act on the Word: Choose one Spirit-led action today—encourage someone, forgive, give, or serve.
A Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that there is no condemnation in You. Fill me afresh with the Holy Spirit. Help me set my mind on things above and walk by the Spirit in every thought, word, and action. Lead me into Your life and peace today. Amen.
