The title of my devotional today is, In the spirit or flesh? Galatians 3:3 asks a searching question: “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?”
It is easy to start with faith and then drift back to self-effort. This devotional is a simple call to return to the Spirit’s leading in our everyday lives.
Scripture Focus
Galatians 3:3 — “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?”
Ephesians 2:8–9 — “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
John 3:3 — “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Walking by the Spirit
We begin the Christian life by grace through faith. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the kingdom of God and leads us into truth. When we slip back into the flesh—striving, pushing, and planning in our own strength—we soon find ourselves weary and directionless. But when we walk by the Spirit, there is clarity, peace, and a sense of God’s timing.
Simple Ways to Re-Centre on the Spirit
- Pause and yield: Before tasks and decisions, take a moment to ask, “Holy Spirit, lead me.”
- Pray with Scripture: Turn Galatians 3:3 and Ephesians 2:8–9 into personal prayers of dependence.
- Practice obedience: Act on the gentle promptings you sense—especially in small things.
- Review your day: Where did you rely on self-effort? Where did you follow the Spirit’s nudge?
Reflection Questions
- Where am I most tempted to “finish by the flesh” what God began by His Spirit?
- What one habit could help me slow down and listen for the Spirit’s leading each day?
- Who could I encourage this week with a simple testimony of God’s guidance?
A Short Prayer
Father, thank You for saving me by grace through faith. Forgive me where I have slipped back into self-effort. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to walk in step with You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
